Liikeilmaisimet, also known as motion detectors, are electronic devices designed to detect movement within a specific area. They are commonly used in security systems, automatic lighting, and other applications where automated responses to the presence of people or objects are desired. The fundamental principle behind most liikeilmaisimet is the detection of changes in their environment.

There are several common types of liikeilmaisimet, each utilizing different sensing technologies. Passive infrared (PIR) sensors are the most prevalent. They detect changes in infrared radiation emitted by warm objects, such as humans and animals. Microwave motion detectors emit microwave pulses and analyze the reflected waves. Movement causes a Doppler shift in the reflected signal, which the sensor can detect. Ultrasonic motion detectors work similarly, emitting high-frequency sound waves and detecting changes in the reflected sound due to movement. Dual-technology detectors combine two or more sensing methods, such as PIR and microwave, to reduce false alarms by requiring both types of sensors to trigger simultaneously.

They are often adjustable to fine-tune their performance and minimize unintended activations.
