Lihasspasmid, also known as muscle spasm or cramp, refers to a sudden, involuntary, and often painful contraction of a muscle or group of muscles. These contractions can range in intensity from a mild twitch to severe, debilitating pain that renders the affected muscle temporarily unusable. While the exact underlying cause of many muscle spasms remains unclear, they are frequently associated with factors such as overuse or fatigue of the muscle, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances (particularly low levels of potassium, calcium, or magnesium), and nerve compression.

Certain medical conditions can also predispose individuals to muscle spasms. These include peripheral artery disease, which restricts blood flow to the limbs, and neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease. Pregnant women may also experience leg cramps more frequently. While most muscle spasms are benign and resolve on their own, persistent or severe spasms warrant medical attention to rule out underlying conditions and discuss appropriate management strategies. Treatment often involves rest, hydration, gentle stretching, and massage. In some cases, pain relievers or muscle relaxants may be prescribed. Prevention can be aided by maintaining adequate hydration, ensuring a balanced diet rich in electrolytes, and proper warm-up and cool-down routines before and after physical activity.
