They act as intermediaries between performers and the market, providing resources for recording, manufacturing, marketing, and access to distribution networks. In exchange, labels typically obtain ownership or specified rights to master recordings and receive a share of revenues through advances, royalties, and licensing deals.

Key functions include talent scouting and A&R, budgeting and overseeing production, negotiating contracts, and coordinating marketing campaigns. Labels also manage rights and licensing, enabling music to appear on streaming services, radio, film, and advertising, and they often oversee the release schedule and catalog management.

There are major labels, part of global conglomerates, with extensive catalogs and international reach, and independent labels (indies) that operate with more autonomy and closer artist relationships. In Finland, as in many countries, both international majors and domestic independents contribute to a diverse music scene spanning genres such as pop, rock, metal, electronic, and folk.

Technological changes, especially digital distribution and streaming, have transformed the role of levy-yhtiöitä. Labels increasingly focus on data-driven marketing, digital catalog management, and licensing opportunities, while some artists choose self-release or distribution-only models to retain creative control.

Criticism of labels often centers on contract terms, revenue splits, and artist autonomy; in response, new models and negotiations aim for more flexible deals and clearer terms, while still leveraging the resources and reach of traditional labels.
