Levymateriaali (sheet material) is a general term for flat, sheet-shaped products used across construction, furniture making, and packaging. These materials are produced in standardized thicknesses and dimensions, enabling efficient manufacturing, planning, and installation. Sheet materials may be natural or synthetic and can function as load-bearing components, interior finishes, or protective surfaces.

Common categories include wood-based sheets (plywood, particleboard, MDF/fiberboard and OSB), gypsum boards, metal sheets (steel and aluminum), and plastic sheets (PVC, polycarbonate). Composite laminates, cement-bonded boards, and glass sheets are also widely used in specialized applications.

Key properties vary by type but often include thickness, strength, stiffness, moisture resistance, fire performance, and surface quality. Processing methods include cutting, drilling, laminating, coating, and edge finishing; many sheets are compatible with mechanical fasteners and adhesives.

Major applications include structural panels in walls and floors, interior finishes such as wall and ceiling coverings, cabinetry and furniture, flooring underlayment, packaging, and signage. In construction, wood-based sheets provide a balance of cost, workability, and strength, while gypsum boards offer fire-rated interior partitions; metal and plastic sheets supply durability and corrosion resistance where needed.

Environmental aspects: wood-based sheets may carry certification such as FSC or PEFC; many sheet materials are recyclable or amenable to energy recovery at end of life.
