leukst

Leukst is the superlative form of the Dutch adjective leuk, meaning pleasant, nice, or enjoyable. It is used to denote the highest degree of pleasantness within a group or comparison.

In standard Dutch, the superlative has two common uses. Before a noun, the attributive superlative is formed as leukste (de leukste film, het leukste boek). In predicate position, after a linking verb like is or was, the predicative superlative appears as leukst (Dat weekend was het leukst; Dat was de leukst[e] ervaring). Both leukst and leukste are widely understood in everyday speech, with the choice often driven by the syntactic position rather than strict rules.

There is also a stylistic distinction. For many speakers, especially in informal speech, leukst/leukste is the usual choice for expressing “the most fun.” Some speakers may prefer alternative phrasing such as meest leuk in particular contexts, but this is less common for short adjectives like leuk and can sound more formal or tentative.

Regional variation is modest but present. Dutch from the Netherlands and Flemish Dutch generally follow the same patterns, though spoken frequency of leukst versus leukste can differ by speaker and region. In writing, especially formal prose, the attributive leukste is standardbefore a noun, and leukst remains common after a verb.
