A letterer is a professional who creates and applies the typography for comics and graphic novels. This includes dialogue balloons, caption boxes, narration, and onomatopoeia, as well as signs and credits. Letterers work with writers and illustrators to convey tone, pace, and readability through text.

Responsibilities include determining balloon placement and size, line breaks, word wrap, and spacing; selecting or designing a lettering style; adjusting kerning and tracking; and ensuring color contrast and legibility across panels and color backgrounds. They must balance aesthetic considerations with legibility across languages and formats.

Process: after the script and thumbnail layout are established, the letterer produces lettering drafts, often in pencil or as digital mock-ups. They collaborate with editors, colorists, and artists to refine balloon shapes, copy fit, and sound effects. Final lettering is typically produced as vector art that can be colored and printed alongside the art.

Tools and methods: modern letterers largely work digitally, using typography software and vector drawing tools. They may use licensed fonts from foundries such as Blambot and Comicraft, or create custom hand-lettering for a distinctive look. The choice of font or hand style affects tone and readability.

History: lettering began as hand-lettered work on the boards and paste-ups in early comics. With advances in desktop publishing and digital production, lettering became largely digital and more flexible, enabling easier localization, safer color adjustments, and adaptation to various formats.

Notable practitioners include Todd Klein, a highly awarded letterer known for work on many DC and Vertigo titles, and John Workman, recognized for his collaborations with various artists. Their work has influenced standards in the field.
