Process often begins with a brief, followed by sketches or thumbnail concepts, roughs for feedback, a final artwork, and file preparation for print or online distribution. Attention to audience, readability, pacing, color theory, and reproducibility is essential. Freelance illustrators frequently handle pitches, contracts, rights, and licensing, while others work as staff artists in publishing houses, studios, or agencies.

Historically, book and magazine illustration flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries with artists such as Beatrix Potter, Arthur Rackham, Howard Pyle, and Norman Rockwell; the advent of photography and later digital tools transformed the practice.
