lelkész

Lelkész is the title used in Hungary for a Protestant clergy member who serves as the spiritual leader and representative of a local congregation. In Hungarian usage, the term typically denotes an ordained minister in churches such as the Reformed Church (Magyarországi Református Egyház), the Lutheran Church, Baptist and other evangelical denominations. In Catholic contexts, different titles are used, and the word lelkész is not ordinarily applied to Catholic priests.

Lelkészek perform a range of duties centered on pastoral care and worship. They lead worship services, preach sermons, and administer the sacraments as dictated by their denomination (for example, baptism and the Lord’s Supper in many Protestant communities). They conduct weddings and funerals, provide spiritual counseling and visitation to the sick and bereaved, and oversee religious education, youth work, and evangelistic or mission activities. They may also supervise church staff, manage church administration and finances, and represent the congregation in ecumenical and community affairs.

Education and ordination are typical prerequisites. Becoming a lelkész generally requires formal theological training at a seminary or faculty of theology, followed by ordination and appointment to a congregation. Ongoing professional development is common, and in many denominations, women may also be ordained as lelkész.

The role is central to congregational life in Protestant churches, with variations in authority, liturgical practice, and governance across denominations. The term emphasizes pastoral care and the responsibility of shepherding the spiritual well-being of the congregation.
