Lehmukset, or lindens, are deciduous trees in the genus Tilia within the mallow family (Malvaceae). The Finnish term covers several species, among the most common in Europe being Tilia cordata (small-leaved lime), Tilia platyphyllos (large-leaved lime), and their hybrid Tilia × europaea. They are native to Europe and western Asia, with some taxa introduced elsewhere.

Lindens are typically tall and wide-spreading, often reaching 20 to 40 meters. They have alternate, heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges. The flowers are fragrant, creamy-yellow and produced in dense clusters in late spring to early summer, each inflorescence accompanied by a large, leaf-like bract. The fruit is a small, rounded nut with a papery bract that aids wind dispersal. The wood is pale and relatively soft.

Ecology and habitat: Lehmukset prefer moist, fertile soils but are adaptable to a range of conditions, from forests to urban streets. They are long-lived and provide extensive shade. Flowers attract pollinators, notably bees, making lindens important for honey production in some regions.

Uses: Beyond ornamental planting in parks and along streets, lehmukset are valued for their flowers, which are used to make tea and feature in traditional remedies in some cultures. The wood is used for carving and turnery, and the trees contribute shade, shelter for wildlife, and urban cooling.

Cultural notes: In European folklore and town life, lindens are associated with communal spaces and gatherings. Many towns have historic or culturally significant linden trees that reflect their long-standing presence in landscapes.
