The concept refers to different placements and proportions of elements such as text blocks, images, headers, and navigation, while the underlying content remains unchanged. In German usage, the term literally combines Layout and Variante.

Layoutvariants are created to adapt content to varying formats, devices, audiences, or contexts. In print publishing, they enable a single editorial concept to be presented across multiple page sizes or formats, for example standard pages versus feature spreads. In digital media and web design, they appear as responsive layouts or design system variants that switch according to viewport width, user preferences, or accessibility needs. Variants can be static, predefined templates, or dynamic, generated by rules or component logic that adjust grid columns, margins, and typography.

Creation and management typically involve master templates, style guides, and component libraries. Designers specify constraints such as grid systems, typography scales, and spacing, then create alternate arrangements that preserve brand identity while optimizing readability and usability. Tools supporting layoutvariante include desktop publishing software, content management systems with templating, and front-end frameworks that implement responsive grids.

Examples include a magazine with a standard two-column layout and a feature-wide three-column variant, or a news site providing a mobile single-column layout and a desktop multi-column layout.
