Lappendekens are patchwork blankets originating in the Dutch-speaking world, constructed from many small pieces of fabric sewn together to form a single textile. The name combines lappen, meaning scraps or rags, with deken, blanket. In Dutch traditions, lappendekens are closely associated with recycling worn clothing and other textile remnants into a functional and decorative bed covering.

Historically produced by women in the Netherlands and Flanders, lappendekens served practical needs and carried family memory. Fabrics were often sourced from household leftovers, old garments, and scrap textiles, sometimes preserving colors or patterns from the wearer's life. Over time, these quilts reflected regional styles and available materials, though many early examples were irregular and improvised rather than following a fixed pattern.

Construction involves cutting fabric into small shapes—typically squares or rectangles—arranging them into a top layer and joining them with running stitches or machine seams. Museums hold historic pieces, and contemporary makers explore traditional patterns alongside new designs.
