Origin and development: The landspaniel concept arose in Europe and North America as breeders sought versatile dogs capable of tracking, flushing, and retrieving on land across varied terrain. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, various lineages of spaniel breeds contributed traits such as keen noses, endurance, and a steady, trainable disposition, leading to what some breeders call landspaniel lines. Today, landspaniel is used by enthusiasts to describe dogs that align with these traits, regardless of formal breed status.

Physical characteristics: Landspaniels are typically medium-sized and athletic, with a balanced build suited to field work. They commonly have pendant ears, a moderate-length coat that can be straight, wavy, or lightly feathered, and colors that range from solids to blends of liver, black, tan, and white.
