Common fields include manufacturer, model, serial number, asset tag, location, owner, purchase date, warranty status, software installed, license information, firmware and hardware revisions, MAC and IP addresses, network interfaces, and maintenance or service history.

These data are typically stored in an asset management system or configuration management database (CMDB). Data are gathered from procurement records, device scans, network discovery, and manual entry, and are maintained through governance processes to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and privacy considerations.

Many organizations align laitetietojen management with ITIL practices and ISO/IEC 19770-1 for IT asset management, and may use common data models or exchange formats to facilitate interoperability among tools.

Used to support asset tracking, software license compliance, maintenance planning, security posture, and financial depreciation, and to inform change management, incident response, and regulatory reporting.
