Lagskipting is the deliberate distribution of work across teams and individuals within an organization or project, aiming to align tasks with available skills, capacity and dependencies. In Norwegian management usage, it refers to dividing work into defined portions assigned to different lags (teams) that are responsible for specific aspects of a process and for coordinating handoffs to others.

The concept relates to the broader idea of division of labor, but emphasizes how work is organized and coordinated in team-based settings rather than only how tasks are broken down at the individual level. Lagskipting can take several forms, including functional groupings (by specialty), cross-functional teams (combining multiple skills in one team), or modular structures (independent units responsible for complete subsystems that connect through interfaces).

Across domains, lagskipting appears in manufacturing lines where tasks are allocated to stations, in software development where front-end, back-end, data engineering, and QA are treated as separate lags, and in logistics or emergency response where specialized teams handle triage, transport, and support functions. The design often focuses on clear ownership, well-defined interfaces between lags, and reliable handoff processes.

Key design considerations include defining task boundaries, ensuring accountability, establishing communication rituals, and maintaining sufficient cross-lag collaboration to avoid silos. Interfaces between lags should be documented and standardized, with integration points and testing arranged to reduce dependency bottlenecks. Lagskipting can improve focus and scalability but may introduce coordination costs and risks of knowledge silos if not managed with attention to alignment and information flow.
