Lagaflejring is a term used in geology to describe the process by which materials are deposited in distinct horizontal layers, or beds, over time. The word combines lag, meaning layer, and aflejring, meaning deposition, and is used to discuss sedimentation in settings such as lakes, rivers, seas, and other bodies of water or environments where material accumulates.

In natural environments, lagaflejring results when suspended particles settle out of a fluid, when chemical precipitates form, or when organic matter accumulates more quickly during certain periods. The result is stratified material with clear bedding planes that separate successive deposits. In lakes and marine basins, the layering may appear as laminae or thicker beds; varves are a well-known example of annual layers created by seasonal variation in sedimentation.

The properties of each layer—its thickness, grain size, composition, and texture—reflect changing energy conditions, sediment supply, chemistry, and biology at the time of deposition. Over longer timescales, diagenetic processes such as compaction and cementation can modify primary layering, but the basic stratification often preserves a chronological record.

Lagaflejring is important for reconstructing past environments and climate, interpreting sedimentary settings, and dating deposits through methods such as varve counting or radiometric techniques. It also has practical implications in engineering and water resource management, where sediment accumulation can affect reservoirs, channels, and land management.
