Labiaplasty, also known as labia minora reduction, is a surgical procedure to alter the appearance or function of the labia minora and, less often, the labia majora. It is performed for cosmetic reasons, symptom relief, or both. Indications include enlarged or protruding labia causing irritation, discomfort during physical activity or sexual activity, or asymmetry from congenital factors or childbirth.

Techniques vary. The most common approach is reduction of the labia minora through edge resection, trimming the inner lips. A wedge resection removes a full-thickness wedge to reduce tissue while preserving the outer edge; other methods include de-epithelialization or laser-assisted techniques. Choice depends on anatomy and surgeon preference.

Procedure and recovery: Labiaplasty is usually done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The operation typically lasts 1–3 hours. Recovery involves swelling, bruising, and mild pain for several days. Patients are usually advised to avoid sexual activity and strenuous exercise for about 4–6 weeks and to follow wound care guidelines and scheduled follow-ups.

Risks and outcomes: Potential complications include infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in sensation, numbness, dyspareunia, asymmetry, wound breakdown, and dissatisfaction. Results are individualized; some patients report improved comfort and self-esteem, while others may require revision procedures.

Considerations: Labiaplasty should be preceded by thorough medical and psychological evaluation and informed consent. The procedure raises ongoing debates about medical necessity, body image, and social influences; non-surgical options and counseling may be appropriate for some individuals.
