An access control system for doors and other barriers, commonly referred to as a låssystem, is a collection of locks and keys that regulate entry to a building, room, or asset. The primary goal is to authorize entry for permitted individuals while restricting access to others. Lås systemer can be purely mechanical or electronic, or combine both elements.

Mechanical låssystemer typically use cylinders with keys cut to specific bittings. A key can operate one lock (single-key), several locks keyed alike, or a hierarchy of locks that respond to different keys in a master-key arrangement. Master-key systems enable a hierarchy where managers or maintenance personnel can open multiple doors without possessing individual keys to every lock. Key control and change management are important to maintain security, including procedures for key issuance, duplication restrictions, and periodic re-keying.

Electronic låssystemer replace or supplement mechanical keys with credentials such as smart cards, key fobs, PIN codes, or biometric data. Locks may be intelligent cylinders or strike-and-controller units connected to a network or a stand-alone controller. Electronic systems often provide audit trails, remote closure, time-based access, and easier key management, but may introduce dependence on power, software, and cybersecurity.

Standards and best practices emphasize appropriate risk assessment, scalability, and compatibility of components. In security planning, factors include the number of users, change frequency, and the expected threat level. Regular maintenance, key management policies, and contingency planning are essential for both mechanical and electronic låssystemer.
