Lämpöeristysvaatteet, commonly translated as thermal clothing or insulated garments, are designed to maintain body heat in cold environments. They work by trapping air, which acts as an insulator, between the wearer and the outside. Common insulating materials include down, synthetic fibers like polyester fill, and fleece. Down, derived from birds, offers excellent warmth-to-weight ratio but loses its insulating properties when wet. Synthetic fills are generally more affordable and retain some warmth even when damp. Fleece, a soft synthetic material, provides good insulation and breathability.

The construction of thermal clothing also plays a role. Garments often feature multiple layers, with an inner layer designed to wick moisture away from the skin, a middle insulating layer, and an outer layer that protects against wind and water. The presence of baffles or compartments in down-filled jackets helps to prevent the insulation from shifting and creating cold spots.

Proper fit is crucial for effective thermal insulation. Clothing that is too tight can compress the insulating material, reducing its ability to trap air. Conversely, clothing that is too loose can allow cold air to circulate freely, diminishing the insulating effect. Layering is a common strategy, allowing wearers to adjust their insulation levels based on activity and changing temperatures. This approach helps to manage perspiration and prevent overheating, which can lead to a drop in body temperature once activity ceases. Thermal clothing is essential for activities such as winter sports, hiking, and work in cold conditions.
