A køleflade, or cooling surface, is a component designed to dissipate heat from a system into its surroundings. Its primary function is to increase the rate of heat transfer, typically from a warmer object to a cooler medium like air or liquid. This is achieved by maximizing the surface area exposed to the cooling medium.

The effectiveness of a køleflade is determined by several factors, including the material used, the geometry of the surface, and the flow rate of the cooling medium. Materials with high thermal conductivity, such as aluminum and copper, are commonly employed to facilitate efficient heat conduction away from the heat source. The design often incorporates fins, pins, or other extended surfaces to significantly increase the total surface area available for heat exchange without a proportional increase in the overall volume occupied by the component.

Køleflader are essential in a wide range of applications where heat generation can lead to performance degradation or component failure. Examples include electronics, where they are used to cool processors and other heat-generating components; automotive engines, to manage operating temperatures; and industrial machinery, to prevent overheating.
