Közüzemiszolgáltatások are essential services provided to the public to ensure basic living standards and economic activity. They typically include the supply and distribution of energy (electricity, natural gas, and district heating), water supply and wastewater management, waste collection and treatment, public transportation, and certain communications and postal services. The exact scope can vary by country and regulatory framework.

These services are commonly delivered by a mix of operators, including public authorities, municipally owned companies, private firms, and public–private partnerships. Network components such as grids, water mains, sewers, and transport infrastructure often operate as natural monopolies with regulated access, while some customer-facing segments may be competitive (for example, choosing electricity or gas suppliers for non-household customers).

Regulation and oversight are central to közüzemiszolgáltatások. National regulators set safety and quality standards, determine tariff levels or price caps, issue licenses, and supervise market entry and competition. A universal service obligation is typically imposed to ensure affordable and reliable access for all households, regardless of location.
