Käyttäjätunnistautuminen, commonly referred to as user authentication in English, is the process of verifying the identity of a user attempting to access a system or service. This is a fundamental security mechanism employed across various digital platforms, from websites and applications to operating systems and network devices. The primary goal of user authentication is to ensure that only authorized individuals gain access to protected resources, thereby preventing unauthorized use, data breaches, and other security threats.

The most common form of user authentication involves a username and password. The user provides their unique username and a corresponding secret password, which the system compares against a stored record. If the credentials match, the user is considered authenticated. However, this method is susceptible to various attacks, such as brute-force attacks or phishing.

To enhance security, more robust authentication methods have been developed. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires users to provide two or more verification factors, such as something they know (password), something they have (a physical token or smartphone), or something they are (biometric data like fingerprints or facial recognition). This significantly increases the difficulty for unauthorized individuals to gain access. Other authentication methods include single sign-on (SSO), which allows users to log in to multiple applications with a single set of credentials, and certificate-based authentication, which uses digital certificates to verify identity. The choice of authentication method often depends on the sensitivity of the data or system being protected and the desired balance between security and user convenience.
