Käynnistyslataaja is the Finnish word for bootloader. A bootloader is a special program that runs when a computer or device is first powered on. Its primary function is to load the operating system into memory and begin its execution. Without a bootloader, the device would not be able to start up the main software.

The process typically begins with the firmware, such as the BIOS or UEFI on a PC, which performs initial hardware checks. After these checks, the firmware locates and executes the bootloader. The bootloader then takes over, identifying the operating system kernel and loading it, along with any necessary drivers and initial ramdisk. Once the operating system kernel is loaded, control is passed to it, and the bootloader's job is complete.

Different operating systems and hardware architectures use various bootloaders. For example, GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) is a common bootloader for Linux systems, while Windows uses its own proprietary boot manager. Embedded systems often have simpler, manufacturer-specific bootloaders. The bootloader can also be configured to offer options, such as selecting which operating system to boot if multiple are installed, or booting into a recovery mode. The design and implementation of bootloaders are critical for system startup and stability.
