Kätepuhastusgeel, often referred to as hand sanitizer, is a liquid, gel, or foam that contains alcohol as its primary active ingredient. It is designed to disinfect the hands when soap and water are not readily available. The alcohol, typically ethanol or isopropanol, works by denaturing proteins and disrupting cell membranes of microorganisms, effectively killing bacteria and viruses.

The use of kätepuhastusgeel gained widespread prominence as a public health measure, particularly in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. It is commonly found in public spaces such as hospitals, schools, offices, and retail establishments. While convenient for quick disinfection, it is important to note that hand sanitizers are not a substitute for thorough handwashing with soap and water, especially when hands are visibly dirty or contaminated with bodily fluids.

Proper application involves dispensing a sufficient amount of gel to cover all surfaces of the hands and rubbing them together until dry. The concentration of alcohol in most hand sanitizers ranges from 60% to 95%. While effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens, some microorganisms, such as norovirus and Clostridium difficile, may be more resistant to alcohol-based sanitizers. Additionally, prolonged or frequent use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers can sometimes lead to dry skin.
