Kyberturva, or kyberturvallisuus, is the field focused on protecting digital information, computer systems, networks, and online services from unauthorized access, disruption, or destruction. It seeks to preserve the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and services and combines technical measures with organizational governance and human factors.

The scope of kyberturva includes information systems, networks, and data across both private and public sectors, as well as critical digital infrastructure and everyday online services. It encompasses risk assessment and management, identity and access management, encryption, secure software development, network and endpoint security, incident response, and business continuity planning. Education and awareness for users, as well as governance, compliance, and policy development, are also essential components.

Threats in kyberturva range from malware, phishing and ransomware to distributed denial-of-service attacks, zero-day exploits, supply chain compromises, and insider threats. Defenses emphasize layered security controls, vulnerability management, regular security testing, robust backups, network segmentation, incident detection and response, and resilient recovery processes. The aim is to minimize risk and shorten recovery time after incidents.

In Finland and many modern economies, kyberturva is supported by national strategies, agencies, and cooperation between government, industry, and citizens. National authorities coordinate incident response, guidance, and protection of critical infrastructure, while international cooperation within the European Union and other alliances strengthens threat intelligence sharing and joint defense initiatives. Ongoing trends include increasing use of cloud services, expanding Internet of Things security, and the growing importance of cyber resilience and privacy.
