Kuumuskindlad (heat-resistant) refers to materials, fabrics, and equipment that resist high temperatures and provide protective barriers against heat. The term encompasses protective gloves and clothing used in industrial, culinary, and laboratory settings, as well as insulating blankets and sleeves.

Materials achieving kuumuskindlad properties include high-performance fibers such as aramids (Nomex, Kevlar), PBI and PBO blends; silica and ceramic fibers; basalt; and coatings of silicone or polyimide. Many products combine these fibers with barrier layers, air gaps, or reflective surfaces to reduce heat transfer. Performance is often classified by temperature range and exposure type, such as contact heat, radiant heat, or molten metal splash.

Standards help quantify safety: in Europe, gloves may be rated under EN 407 for heat and flame protection, while protective clothing for heat and flame exposure is addressed by EN ISO 11612; additional tests assess durability, dexterity, and immersion. Similar international standards exist for other markets.

Common applications include ovens and food processing, metalworking, glass production, and electronics assembly, where workers face radiant, convective, or contact heat. In some contexts, kuumuskindlad gear is used for firefighting or emergency response, though specialized equipment is typical.

Maintenance and safety: protection depends on material integrity; prolonged or intense exposure can degrade fibers and coatings. Regular inspection, cleaning per manufacturer guidelines, and timely replacement are recommended to maintain protection.
