Kuuloliittymä, often translated as "audio interface" in English, is a piece of hardware that acts as a bridge between a computer and external audio devices. Its primary function is to convert analog audio signals from microphones, instruments, or other audio sources into digital data that a computer can process, and conversely, to convert digital audio data from the computer back into analog signals that can be sent to speakers or headphones.

Audio interfaces typically feature input and output connectors for various audio equipment. Common inputs include XLR connectors for microphones, and 1/4-inch (6.35mm) jacks for line-level instruments like guitars and keyboards. Outputs usually consist of 1/4-inch jacks for connecting to studio monitors or amplifiers, and sometimes headphone outputs. Many audio interfaces also include MIDI input and output for connecting synthesizers and other MIDI-compatible devices.

The quality of an audio interface is largely determined by its analog-to-digital (ADC) and digital-to-analog (DAC) converters, as well as its preamplifiers, which boost the signal from microphones. These components significantly impact the clarity, fidelity, and dynamic range of the recorded and playback audio. Audio interfaces connect to a computer via USB, Thunderbolt, or sometimes older interfaces like FireWire, and require drivers to function correctly. They are essential tools for music production, audio recording, podcasting, and any application where high-quality audio interaction with a computer is needed.
