Kustcorridors are linear coastal landscape features designed to preserve ecological connectivity along the coast and to support sustainable human use. They connect habitats and landscapes from inland areas to the shoreline, integrating dunes, beaches, wetlands, river mouths, and shoreline greenways. The objective is to maintain or restore ecological processes, enable wildlife movement, and enhance climate adaptation and flood risk management.

Key functions include habitat linkage for coastal and migratory species, such as shorebirds and small mammals, hydrological connectivity, sediment dynamics, and opportunities for nature-based recreation. They also serve as buffers against storms and sea-level rise by preserving or restoring natural dune systems and wetland areas.

Design and components vary but commonly include protected dune belts, native vegetation, tidal wetlands, soft-sediment shores, buffer zones, and public access infrastructure such as trails and boardwalks. Management emphasizes minimal disturbance at critical times (e.g., nesting seasons), restoration of degraded habitats, and land-use planning that minimizes fragmentation. Where feasible, corridors connect existing protected areas to create larger networked habitats.

Planning and governance require cross-sector cooperation among national and regional authorities, water managers, conservation groups, landowners, and local communities. Funding and monitoring are essential to track ecological outcomes and public use, and to adapt to changing conditions from climate change and coastal development.
