Greenways are long, narrow corridors of land or waterways set aside to conserve natural resources, provide habitat, and offer non-motorized transportation and recreational opportunities. They often follow natural features such as rivers, ridgelines, or abandoned rail lines and connect parks, neighborhoods, and urban centers. Greenways aim to balance conservation with public access, promoting biodiversity, floodplain management, and quiet enjoyment of the outdoors.

Design and components vary, but common elements include multi-use trails, buffer zones, ecological restoration, crossings, and signage. Some greenways emphasize habitat connectivity by linking fragments of green space to form a corridor for wildlife, while others focus on recreation and commuting, with paved paths suitable for walking, running, cycling, and in some cases, inline skating. In urban areas, greenways may incorporate streetscape improvements and public art.

Types include linear greenways that follow rivers, rail trails converted from former rail corridors, and beltline or parkway concepts that encircle or traverse cities. Blueways, along with wetlands and park lands, can be integrated to extend water-based recreation and ecological functions. Greenways vary in ownership and management, often relying on a mix of public agencies, nonprofits, and private landholders.

Planning for greenways requires interjurisdictional coordination, land acquisition or easements, and ongoing maintenance. Benefits include enhanced habitat, reduced urban heat islands, improved water quality through riparian buffers, opportunities for active transportation, and increased access to nature. Challenges can include funding gaps, land-use conflicts, safety concerns at intersections, and equitable access across communities.
