Kurkvloer, or cork flooring, is a floor covering made from the bark of the cork oak (Quercus suber). It is produced in two main forms: solid cork, milled into sheets or tiles, and engineered cork, which uses a cork wear layer atop a core made of plywood or fiberboard with a protective top layer. Some variants combine cork with other materials to create different finishes and installation systems, such as click-lock planks.

Cork flooring has several notable properties. It provides natural thermal and acoustic insulation, offering a warm feel underfoot and good sound dampening in a room. Cork is lightweight, elastic, and resistant to mold and mildew when kept relatively dry. The material contains suberin, which contributes to its durability and low allergen profile. However, cork is not inherently waterproof, and prolonged exposure to moisture can cause damage unless the product is properly sealed and maintained.

Installation and use. Kurkvloer can be glued down, installed as a floating floor, or fitted as tiles, depending on the product. It is commonly used in living areas, bedrooms, and kitchens, but is generally discouraged in fully wet areas unless the product is specifically designed for moisture-prone spaces and has appropriate sealing. A moisture barrier and a suitable finish are typically recommended to protect the surface and extend its life. Regular care involves sweeping or vacuuming to remove dust and using a damp mop with mild cleaners; avoid harsh chemicals and standing water.

Environment and sustainability. Cork is a renewable resource harvested from cork oak bark without felling the tree. Bark regeneration allows harvesting roughly every 9–12 years. Sustainable harvesting, certifications (such as FSC or PEFC), and proper processing contribute to a relatively low environmental footprint for kurkvloer. Proper finishing and maintenance help maximize its long-term durability.
