Kundli, also known as a Janam Kundali, is a birth chart used in Indian astrology (Jyotish). It maps the positions of the planets at the time and place of a person’s birth and is used to interpret personality traits and life patterns.

To create a kundli, astrologers input birth date, time, and location into a chart or software. The chart centers on the ascendant (Lagna) and the twelve houses, each house representing life areas such as self, wealth, communication, family, health, and career. The positions of the Sun, Moon, and other planets in the zodiac signs are noted, along with planetary rulers and aspects. In practice, several divisional charts (varga charts), notably the Navamsa (D9), are used to refine readings.

Common uses include personality assessment, life trend predictions, and timing of events through planetary periods (dashas, especially Vimshottari Dasha). Compatibility analyses for marriage (Guna Milan) compare two kundlis on factors like temperament and the likelihood of a harmonious relationship.

Variants include the Moon chart (Chandra Kundli) and specialized charts; though the most widely used is the birth chart or Janam Kundali. The practice relies on the sidereal zodiac with ayanamsa adjustments, and different astrologers may use alternative ayanamsas (e.g., Lahiri, Raman).
