Etymology and usage often place kullets in in-universe construction kits that emphasize rapid deployment and scalability. The word is usually presented as coming from a fictional language or design tradition, with “kullet” signifying a building block or segment.

Design and variants commonly share several features. Most kullets are cube- or prism-shaped and include docking faces that allow multi-directional connections to other kullets. Materials range from advanced composites to recycled polymers, with emphasis on insulation, structural integrity, and ease of transport. Variants are typically categorized by function: structural kullets provide load-bearing frames; habitable kullets offer living space with integrated life-support and environmental controls; and utility kullets house power, water, waste, and communications systems.
