Kräkningar, scientifically known as emesis, is the involuntary expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth. This bodily reflex is typically triggered by irritation or stimulation of the vomiting center in the brain. Common causes include food poisoning, infections, motion sickness, and certain medications. The process often begins with nausea, a feeling of unease and the urge to vomit, followed by abdominal contractions and retching before the actual expulsion occurs.

The contents expelled can vary, including undigested food, stomach acid, bile, and sometimes blood. Vomiting is a protective mechanism designed to rid the body of harmful substances. However, frequent or severe vomiting can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and malnutrition, necessitating medical attention. Dehydration is a significant concern, especially in infants and the elderly, as it can rapidly become life-threatening.

Treatment for vomiting usually focuses on addressing the underlying cause. For mild cases, resting the digestive system by avoiding food and drinks for a short period, followed by a gradual reintroduction of clear liquids and bland foods, is often sufficient. Antiemetic medications can be prescribed to suppress the vomiting reflex when necessary. Persistent vomiting, especially if accompanied by fever, severe abdominal pain, or blood in the vomit, requires prompt medical evaluation to rule out serious conditions.
