Krematória are facilities designed for the cremation of human or animal remains. The process involves burning the body at very high temperatures, reducing it to ashes and bone fragments. These remains are then typically processed into a fine powder and returned to the deceased's family in an urn. Krematória are a modern alternative to traditional burial and have become increasingly popular in many parts of the world due to various factors, including space limitations for cemeteries, environmental concerns, and personal preference.

The process of cremation itself is carried out in a specialized oven called a retort or cremator. These machines are engineered to reach temperatures between 1,400 and 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit (760 to 980 degrees Celsius). During cremation, the body is placed in a combustible container, often a specially designed casket or shroud, and then introduced into the retort. The high heat breaks down the organic matter, leaving behind bone fragments. Following cremation, these bone fragments are cooled, then pulverized in a cremulator, a device similar to a mill, to achieve a uniform granular consistency. The resulting cremated remains are then typically placed in a temporary container or a selected urn.

Krematória are subject to strict regulations concerning operation, emissions, and the handling of remains to ensure dignity and public safety. They can be standalone facilities or often integrated into funeral homes. The choice to cremate is a personal one, influenced by cultural, religious, and individual beliefs and desires.
