Kreativit is the capacity to generate ideas, approaches, or solutions that are both novel and useful within a given context. Although closely related to the Western notion of creativity, kreativit is discussed in many languages with similar aims but different emphases on process, product, or person.

In psychology, kreativit is seen as a product of cognitive processes, motivation, and environment. Divergent thinking, associative thinking, and the ability to reframe problems are considered important components. The four-stage model — preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification — is a classical description of how creative ideas emerge. Other theories, such as Amabile's componential theory, highlight domain-relevant skills, creativity-relevant processes (such as cognitive flexibility), and intrinsic motivation as determinants of creative performance.

Measurement of kreativitet is debated. Instruments like tests of divergent thinking exist, but their predictive validity, cultural fairness, and applicability across domains are limited. Critics emphasize that creativity is contextual and that external factors such as culture, resources, and collaboration shape creative outcomes.

Environmental and educational factors that promote kreativit include supportive climates that tolerate risk and failure, exposure to diverse experiences, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and time for reflection. Training and education can nurture creative thinking through inquiry-based learning, problem-based projects, and opportunities to experiment.

Applications of kreativitet span arts, science, business, and public policy. Creative work should balance novelty with usefulness and feasibility. While creativity can drive innovation, it is not guaranteed by individual traits alone; organizational structures and social norms play critical roles in translating creative ideas into real-world impact.
