Kowalstwo, known in English as blacksmithing, is the craft of shaping iron and steel by heating it in a forge and hammering on an anvil. Traditional kowalstwo encompasses forging, welding, bending, twisting, and finishing to produce tools, hardware, architectural elements, blades, and decorative objects.

Historically, kowalstwo is among the oldest metalworking trades. Blacksmiths supplied agricultural tools, weapons, and construction components, and their work was central to workshops, towns, and military supply. In Poland, kowalstwo developed within urban guilds and rural communities, adapting to changes in technology from medieval times to the present. The craft remains active today in restoration, artisanal production, and decorative metalwork.

Core techniques include heating metal in a forge, shaping it on an anvil, and refining with filing and grinding. Welding methods such as forge welding join pieces. Heat treatment—annealing, hardening, and tempering—controls hardness and ductility. Common tools are the forge, anvil, hammer, tongs, swages, and hardy tools.
