Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the buildup of plaque within the artery walls. This plaque is composed of cholesterol, fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin. As plaque accumulates, it narrows the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart muscle. This narrowing is a progressive process that can begin in childhood and worsen over decades.

When the coronary arteries become significantly narrowed or completely blocked due to atherosclerosis, the heart muscle may not receive enough oxygen-rich blood.
