Koszorúératheroszklerotikus refers to atherosclerosis affecting the coronary arteries. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the buildup of plaque within the artery walls. This plaque is composed of cholesterol, fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin. As plaque accumulates, it narrows the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart muscle. This narrowing is a progressive process that can begin in childhood and worsen over decades.

When the coronary arteries become significantly narrowed or completely blocked due to atherosclerosis, the heart muscle may not receive enough oxygen-rich blood. This condition is known as ischemic heart disease. Symptoms can include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and fatigue. If a plaque ruptures, it can lead to the formation of a blood clot, which can cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction) if it completely obstructs blood flow.

Risk factors for developing koszorúératheroszklerotikus include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, smoking, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, a family history of heart disease, and increasing age. The diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests such as electrocardiograms (ECGs), stress tests, and coronary angiography. Treatment aims to slow or reverse the progression of atherosclerosis and manage symptoms, often involving lifestyle changes, medications to control blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood clotting, and in some cases, procedures like angioplasty or bypass surgery.
