Kosketusnäytöt, known in English as touchscreens, are input devices that allow users to interact with electronic devices by touching the screen directly. They are a ubiquitous feature in modern technology, found in smartphones, tablets, laptops, ATMs, and many other consumer electronics. The underlying technology varies, but most commonly involves a grid of sensors embedded within or on top of the display. When the screen is touched, these sensors detect the location and movement of the contact.

There are several primary types of touchscreens. Resistive touchscreens, an older technology, work by two flexible layers pressing together when touched, completing a circuit at the point of contact. Capacitive touchscreens, which are more common today, use the electrical properties of the human body. They detect the disturbance in the screen's electrostatic field caused by a conductive object, usually a finger. Other types include infrared and surface acoustic wave (SAW) touchscreens, though these are less prevalent in consumer devices.

The development of touchscreens has significantly changed human-computer interaction, moving away from traditional mice and keyboards towards more intuitive and direct manipulation. This has paved the way for mobile computing and has become a defining feature of many portable electronic devices. The sensitivity and responsiveness of touchscreens continue to improve, enabling more complex gestures and finer control.
