The word combines kort (short) with gemengd (mixed). In practice, the term appears in agriculture, horticulture, and feed formulation to distinguish simpler blends from more extensive, highly varied mixtures.

In agricultural contexts, kortgemende zaaimengsels refer to seed blends that contain only a few species, typically chosen for specific soil types or climates and intended to establish a straightforward or quickly establishing sward. In animal feed, kortgemende ruwvoer or similar formulations describe rations with a limited number of ingredients, selected for predictable performance and ease of mixing.

Kortgemengd is often contrasted with langgemengd or sterk gemengd, which denote more diverse or thoroughly blended mixtures. The choice between kort- and langgemengd depends on factors such as cost, sowing strategy, site conditions, and management goals.

Advantages of kortgemengd blends include lower cost, simpler quality control, faster production, and easier distribution. Disadvantages can include reduced biodiversity, less resilience to pests or weather variation, and narrower nutrient or soil-improvement benefits.
