Coronary artery disease (CAD), also known as ischemic heart disease, occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed or blocked due to the buildup of plaque, a condition called atherosclerosis. This can lead to angina (chest pain) and, in severe cases, myocardial infarction (heart attack). Risk factors for CAD include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, and a family history of heart disease.

Diagnosis of coronary artery disease typically involves medical imaging techniques such as coronary angiography, echocardiography, or cardiac CT scans. Treatment options may include lifestyle modifications, medications, and, in some cases, invasive procedures like angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Early detection and management of coronary artery disease are essential for preventing heart attacks and improving overall cardiovascular health.
