koosseisud

Koosseisud are the lineups or makeups of performers that form a musical or performing-arts ensemble for a given performance. The term covers both formal groups such as orchestras and choirs and more informal formations such as jazz combos or theatre troupes. In concert programs, press material, and scholarly writing, koosseisud specify the instrumentation and personnel for a work or event. A piece may be presented with different koosseisud, depending on interpretation, venue, and available musicians; for example, a symphony can be performed with the full orchestra or a reduced chamber ensemble.

Common types of koosseisud in music include the symphony orchestra (sümfooniaorkester) with strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion; chamber orchestra (kammerorkester); string quartet; wind quintet; choir (koor); and jazz trio or quartet. In theatre or film, koosseisud may refer to the cast or the ensemble of actors and performers. In all cases, the term underscores the makeup of the group rather than the work itself.

In Estonian usage, koosseisud is also used to denote the membership of non-musical groups, such as the committee’s or jury’s roster for a particular event. The focus is on who participates and what roles they have within the group.
