Kontextdrift, sometimes written kontextdrift, is a term used in data analysis and machine learning to describe changes in the contextual factors that accompany data and influence how inputs should be interpreted. Rather than a pure change in the relationship between inputs and targets, kontextdrift refers to shifts in the surrounding context—such as user goals, tasks, environment, or interface—that alter the meaning or relevance of features.

Kontextdrift is closely related to concept drift but emphasizes context rather than the core predictive mapping itself. Contextual changes can affect which features are informative, how signals are weighted, or what constitutes a valid outcome. Context can include user intent, task framing, device, location, social setting, or time-related factors.

Causes of context drift include evolving user populations, updates to platforms or workflows, changes in tasks or goals, shifts in environment, and new interaction modalities. The effects can manifest as degraded model performance, inconsistent recommendations, or misinterpretation of signals when the same input is interpreted differently in different contexts.

Detection and mitigation involve monitoring contextual features alongside model performance. Drift detectors can compare distributions of context variables over time or across user segments. Mitigation strategies include building context-aware models, incorporating explicit context features, using continual or meta-learning, and applying domain adaptation or adapter modules to preserve performance across contexts.

Examples include chatbots whose responses vary with the prior conversation context, or recommender systems whose relevance changes with seasonal or situational context.
