Kontaktplacering refers to the position and size of the proximal contact area between neighboring teeth in the dental arch. The proximal contact is the area on the mesial and distal surfaces where two adjacent teeth touch. Correct kontaktplacering is essential for maintaining interdental health and dentition stability.

In practice, kontaktplacering is considered in diagnostics and treatment across several areas. In restorative dentistry, when preparing teeth or placing crowns, fillings, bridges, or implants, clinicians aim to reproduce natural contact areas. A proper contact reduces food impaction, helps maintain the interproximal papilla, and supports periodontal health, while avoiding overhanging margins or open contacts that trap plaque. In orthodontics, contact placement influences tooth alignment and occlusion; improper contacts can create spaces or crowding and affect bite stability. For implant restorations, the restoration must recreate adjacent contacts to maintain the papilla and prevent bone loss around the implant site.

Assessment is performed clinically by passing dental floss through the contact area; a contact should allow gentle resistance without causing trauma. Radiographs, especially bitewings, can aid in assessing proximal relationships during planning or follow-up. Modern restorative techniques use matrix systems, wedges and careful contouring to achieve appropriate contact height and width, while digital planning supports accurate replication of contacts in implants and bridges.
