Kontaktimittaukset, or contact measurements, refer to a class of measurement techniques where the measuring instrument makes direct physical contact with the object being measured. This is in contrast to non-contact measurements, which use methods like optical, acoustic, or electromagnetic sensing. Contact measurements are fundamental in many scientific and industrial disciplines.

The primary principle behind contact measurements is the transfer of physical properties between the object and the sensor. For instance, in temperature measurement, a thermocouple or resistance thermometer physically touches the surface whose temperature is to be determined. Similarly, in dimensional metrology, a caliper or micrometer directly touches the edges or surfaces to ascertain length, width, or diameter. Force measurement often involves a load cell that directly bears the force applied by the object.

Advantages of contact measurements include their potential for high accuracy and precision, especially when properly calibrated. They can often be simpler and more cost-effective to implement than sophisticated non-contact systems. However, contact methods can have drawbacks. The physical contact can sometimes influence the measurement itself, a phenomenon known as perturbation. For example, touching a hot object with a cooler thermometer will slightly lower the object's temperature. Additionally, contact measurements can be slower and may not be suitable for very delicate, rapidly moving, or inaccessible objects. Wear and tear on both the measuring instrument and the object can also be a concern with repeated contact. The choice between contact and non-contact measurement depends heavily on the specific application, desired accuracy, cost constraints, and the nature of the object being measured.
