Kontaktdonsmotstånd, often translated as contact resistance, refers to the electrical resistance that occurs at the interface between two conductive surfaces that are in contact. This resistance is an inherent property of any electrical connection and arises from several factors.

The primary contributors to contact resistance include the microscopic imperfections on the surfaces of the conductors, the presence of oxide layers or other contaminants, and the pressure applied to hold the contacts together. Even polished metal surfaces are not perfectly flat at a microscopic level, leading to a limited number of actual points of contact. The electrical current must then flow through these small contact areas, effectively increasing the overall resistance of the circuit.

Contamination, such as dirt, grease, or corrosion products, can significantly increase contact resistance by forming insulating barriers between the conductive surfaces. Oxidation is a common issue, especially with metals like copper and silver, where a thin, non-conductive oxide layer can form on the surface.

The pressure between the contacts plays a crucial role. Higher pressure generally reduces contact resistance by increasing the contact area and breaking through any thin oxide layers. However, excessive pressure can deform the contacts, potentially leading to long-term reliability issues.

High contact resistance can lead to several problems, including power loss due to Joule heating (I²R losses), which can cause overheating and damage to components. It can also result in voltage drops across the connection, affecting the performance of sensitive electronic devices and potentially leading to signal degradation. Maintaining low and stable contact resistance is therefore essential for reliable electrical and electronic systems. This is achieved through proper material selection, surface preparation, and appropriate connection methods.
