Konservatuvar, or conservatory, is an institution dedicated to higher education and professional training in the performing arts, typically specializing in music, theatre, and dance. In Turkish usage the term refers to schools that may be standalone or affiliated with a university, and that prepare students for professional careers as performers, composers, conductors, singers, actors, choreographers, as well as for teaching and scholarly work.

Historically, conservatories emerged in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries as specialized schools for training musicians in performance and composition. In Turkey, Western classical music education developed in the late Ottoman and early Republican periods, and many conservatories were established to train professional artists and pedagogy, becoming integral parts of national cultural life.

Curriculum typically combines applied study with theoretical subjects and ensembles. Students take instrument or voice lessons, participate in chamber and large ensembles, and attend master classes, rehearsals, and recitals. Programs lead to bachelor’s degrees and often master’s and doctoral degrees or diplomas in performance, composition, conducting, musicology, or related disciplines. Admission generally requires auditions or juried selections; some schools also require entrance exams in theory and language.

Facilities commonly include practice rooms, concert and recital venues, orchestras or ensembles, recording studios, and teaching spaces. Graduates pursue careers as performers, teachers, composers, conductors, or researchers; many work in national or regional cultural institutions, schools, orchestras, and theater or dance companies. Globally, conservatories vary in size and emphasis, but share a focus on intensive artistic training and professional preparation, alongside broader university education in many cases.
