Komposites are materials composed of two or more constituents with different properties, combined to produce characteristics superior to the individual components. The most common arrangement includes a matrix that binds and protects the reinforcement, and the reinforcement that provides strength, stiffness, and sometimes toughness. Together they create a material with tailored behavior that can be oriented and designed for specific applications.

Matrices are typically polymers, metals, or ceramics. Polymer matrices (such as epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester) are prevalent due to their processability and good corrosion resistance. Reinforcements include fibers (glass, carbon, aramid) and particulate materials. The interface between matrix and reinforcement is crucial for load transfer and durability.

Advantages of composites include high specific strength and stiffness, low density, and the ability to tailor properties for particular loads and environments. They offer corrosion and fatigue resistance and can enable complex shapes. Limitations involve higher production costs, specialized manufacturing equipment, and sensitivity to damage mechanisms like delamination and matrix cracking. Recyclability and end‑of‑life handling remain challenging for many commonly used thermoset systems.

Manufacturing approaches vary, including hand lay-up, filament winding, pultrusion, resin transfer molding, autoclave curing, and tape casting. The resulting properties depend on reinforcement type, orientation, volume fraction, and resin choice, leading to anisotropy and performance optimization.

Applications span aerospace, automotive, wind energy, marine, civil engineering, and sporting goods. The field continues to evolve with advances in thermoplastic matrices, bio-based components, and sustainable recycling methods.
