Kompaktere are machines designed to reduce the volume of materials by applying pressure to compact them. They are used in waste management, recycling, packaging, and material handling. The term is used in several European languages as the plural form of kompakter, a device that compacts.

There are several main categories of kompaktere. Waste compactors are installed in households, offices, and commercial facilities to compress refuse into a dense unit that is easier to store and transport. Cardboard balers and paper compactors are used in recycling facilities to produce dense bales for efficient shipping. Metal can crushers and compactors convert metal scrap into briquettes or denser blocks, facilitating handling and melting. Industrial compactors may handle bulk materials such as soil, mulch, or mineral powders, and may be vertical or horizontal in orientation.

Most kompaktere operate by moving a piston or ram inside a chamber. The material is placed in the chamber, pressure is applied until a target volume is reached, and an ejector or bale tying mechanism removes the finished bale or compacted block. Drive systems are hydraulic, mechanical, or pneumatic, with control systems to ensure safe operation.

Applications and considerations. Benefits include space savings, reduced disposal and transportation costs, and easier handling. Limitations include material suitability (not all items can be compacted), energy use, maintenance requirements, and safety concerns such as pinch points and ejection hazards. In environmental contexts, kompaktere can contribute to more efficient waste management and recycling workflows when integrated with appropriate sorting and processing.
