Koliitti is the Finnish term for colitis, an umbrella term referring to inflammation of the colon. It is a component of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and can present as either an acute or chronic condition. The most well-known forms with colonic involvement are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease with colitis.

Symptoms commonly include abdominal pain, persistent or recurrent diarrhea, and often blood or mucus in the stool. Additional signs may be urgency, tenesmus, fatigue, and unintended weight loss. The severity and pattern of symptoms vary between individuals and over time.

Causes of koliitti are multifactorial and not fully understood. They involve a combination of genetic susceptibility, immune system dysregulation, gut microbiota, and environmental factors. Smoking, infections, and certain medications can influence disease activity and course. The condition is not caused by a single identifiable pathogen.

Imaging studies may be used to evaluate the extent of disease. Differential diagnoses include infectious colitis and other forms of bowel disease.

Treatment aims to induce and maintain remission and is tailored to severity and the specific form of koliitti. Common approaches include aminosalicylates, corticosteroids for flares, and immunomodulators or biologic therapies for longer-term control. Diet and nutrition play a supportive role. Surgery is considered when medical therapy fails or complications arise; it can be curative for ulcerative colitis in many cases, while Crohn's disease with colitis may require segmental resection or other interventions.

Long-term management focuses on symptom control, monitoring for disease-related complications, and regular surveillance, particularly for colorectal cancer risk in prolonged colitis. The course and impact on quality of life vary, requiring individualized care plans.
