Koletsüstiit is the medical term for inflammation of the gallbladder. It is most commonly caused by gallstones obstructing the cystic duct, which is the tube that carries bile from the gallbladder to the small intestine. This obstruction leads to a buildup of bile and can cause bacterial infection. While gallstones are the most frequent cause, other factors such as tumors, severe illness, or trauma can also lead to gallbladder inflammation.

Symptoms of koletsüstiit typically include sudden and severe pain in the upper right abdomen, which may radiate to the right shoulder or back. This pain is often referred to as biliary colic. Other common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal tenderness. The pain may be more severe after eating fatty foods. In some cases, a person may also develop jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes, if the inflammation affects the bile ducts.

Diagnosis of koletsüstiit usually involves a physical examination, blood tests to check for signs of infection and inflammation, and imaging studies such as an ultrasound. An ultrasound is the primary tool used to visualize gallstones and the gallbladder. In some instances, a CT scan or HIDA scan may be used.

Treatment for koletsüstiit depends on the severity of the inflammation and the presence of complications. Mild cases may be managed with pain medication, antibiotics, and a low-fat diet. However, surgical removal of the gallbladder, a procedure called cholecystectomy, is often necessary, especially if gallstones are present or if the inflammation is severe. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a minimally invasive procedure, is the most common surgical approach.
